Hurricane From The AirMany boaters will, at some point in their aquatic adventures, have to deal with either the direct or indirect effects associated with hurricanes. In order to best prepare for such situations, your best tool is your knowledge. The more you know about current weather conditions and what to do in emergency situations, the less damage you and your boat are likely to sustain.

It all starts with following weather reports. If you boat in an area that is exposed to hurricanes or other extreme conditions, this is doubly important. Always be aware of what's happening weather-wise on the marina and never sail out during inclement weather. With plenty of advance warning, you'll have a bit of time to make any necessary preparations for a big storm.

The best thing you can do if a storm is coming is pull your boat out of the water, which protects the vessel from the initial impact of the storm. If you plan on pulling your boat, do it sooner rather than later to beat the traffic at the ramp.

If you cannot move your boat, it's time to batten the hatches. What does this old maritime phrase actually mean? Essentially you must remove all items that are not permanently attached to the boat, secure all hatches and portholes, detach or cover the windscreens, use extra fenders and possibly even drop an anchor or two. This all helps secure the boat and prevent damage. Start by removing objects like life jackets, cooking utensils and anything else that could get lost and/or become a projectile during strong winds. Collect tires and other impact-absorbing items and latch them to the boat at all potential contact points. You may wish to make a checklist of things to do in case of an impending storm so everything necessary gets done in time.

Whichever of these methods works for you, make sure you learn the ins and outs of the process before a storm hits and you're forced into crisis mode. Both of these methods are meant to keep both you and your property safe from harm. That means, whatever happens on the water, make sure you're not in it. Never attempt to "ride out" a storm inside of your boat.

And if a storm does manage to damage your boat, you can always call your trusted independent insurance agent.

We've got your back. Call Sweet & Baker Insurance Brokers at (415) 512-2100 for more information on San Francisco boat insurance.
